Jesus is King
“So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.” (2 Samuel 5:3)
After years of civil war and division, something remarkable happened in Israel. The scattered tribes, weary from conflict and instability, came together with one voice to anoint David as their king. This wasn't merely a political arrangement, it was a covenant made before the Lord, acknowledging that David's kingship was divinely ordained.
When the elders poured oil over David's head, they weren't just installing a ruler, they were recognizing God's chosen one. David had already been anointed privately by Samuel years earlier, that's in 1 Samuel 16:13, but now the entire nation publicly acknowledged what God had already decreed.
This moment points us forward to the ultimate anointed one whose very title, “Christ”, means the anointed one. Just as David brought the divided tribes together under one banner, Jesus gathers believers from every nation, tribe, and tongue under His perfect rule.
Political leaders disappoint us, human institutions fail us, even our own resolve crumbles under pressure. But we have a king like no other. Unlike earthly rulers whose power depends on polls and popular opinion, Jesus' authority comes from the Father Himself.
At His baptism, the heavenly voice declared,
“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)
His coronation wasn't temporary or conditional, it was eternal and absolute.
When anxiety whispers that your life is spinning out of control, remember that your King's rule extends over every circumstance. When relationships fracture and unity seems impossible, remember that Jesus is building His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. When you feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things, remember that the King of kings has called you His own.
David's anointing involved making a covenant before the Lord. This wasn't a casual agreement, it was a sacred bond witnessed by heaven itself. The people pledged their loyalty to David, and David pledged his faithful rule over them. How much greater is the covenant your King has made with you!
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus established a new covenant, sealed not with oil but with His own blood. This covenant doesn't depend on your performance or faithfulness, it rests entirely on His finished work.
In Matthew 16.28 we read Jesus saying,
“For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
You are the citizen of an unshakable kingdom. Every challenge you face, you face as one under the protection of the eternal King. He will never leave you.
Remember that you serve the King who was chosen before the foundation of the world, anointed with the Holy Spirit without measure, and whose kingdom will have no end.
The same sovereign authority that brought peace to ancient Israel works even now to conform you to His image and secure your eternal joy. No earthly power can overthrow His reign and no circumstance can separate you from His love.
Jesus, You are the true and better David, the King whose reign brings perfect peace and unity to all who trust in You. I'm sorry for seeking security in earthly rulers and temporary solutions rather than resting in You. Thank You for making us citizens of Your everlasting kingdom. Please cause us to live each day with the confidence that comes from serving under Your perfect rule, and grant us the grace to reflect Your unity and love to a divided world.
