Praying God’s Promises

Here are 31 biblical promises to guide our prayers for ourselves and others:

  1. God gives wisdom generously "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." (James 1:5) We can pray that God would grant them wisdom in their decisions and understanding of His will.

  2. God works all things for good "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28) We can pray that God would orchestrate every circumstance in their life for their spiritual good and His glory.

  3. God supplies every need "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) We can pray that God would provide abundantly for their material, emotional, and spiritual needs.

  4. God gives strength to the weary "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength." (Isaiah 40:29) We can pray that God would sustain them with supernatural strength in their weakness and exhaustion.

  5. God grants peace "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7) We can pray that God would fill their hearts with His transcendent peace amid anxiety and turmoil.

  6. God comforts the afflicted "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4a) We can pray that God would personally minister comfort to them in their suffering and grief.

  7. God sanctifies His people "Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23) We can pray that God would progressively transform them into Christlikeness through His sanctifying work.

  8. God keeps His children from falling "Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy." (Jude 24) We can pray that God would preserve them in faith and guard them from apostasy until the end.

  9. God completes His work "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6) We can pray that God would faithfully continue and finish the saving work He has started in their soul.

  10. God gives grace in temptation "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13) We can pray that God would provide them with grace to resist sin and a way to escape temptation.

  11. God hears prayer "The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth." (Psalm 145:18) We can pray that God would draw near to them and answer their prayers according to His perfect will.

  12. God gives a new heart "And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh." (Ezekiel 36:26) We can pray that God would regenerate their heart and give them genuine spiritual life and desire for Him.

  13. God forgives sin "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) We can pray that God would grant them repentant hearts and assurance of His complete forgiveness through Christ.

  14. God establishes and strengthens "And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you." (1 Peter 5:10) We can pray that God would use their suffering to make them more steadfast and spiritually mature.

  15. God gives knowledge of His will "And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding." (Colossians 1:9) We can pray that God would illuminate their minds to understand and embrace His revealed will for their lives.

  16. God's Word accomplishes His purpose "So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11) We can pray that God would use His Word powerfully in their life to achieve His saving purposes.

  17. God helps in time of need "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16) We can pray that God would meet them with timely grace and mercy when they approach Him in faith.

  18. God increases faith "Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, 'I believe; help my unbelief!'" (Mark 9:24) We can pray that God would overcome their doubts and strengthen their faith in His promises and character.

  19. God grants fruitfulness "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5) We can pray that God would enable them to abide in Christ and produce spiritual fruit for His glory.

  20. God gives eternal life "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) We can pray that God would grant them saving faith in Christ and the gift of eternal life.

  21. God causes growth "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth." (1 Corinthians 3:6) We can pray that God would bring supernatural spiritual growth beyond any human effort or ministry.

  22. God provides rest "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) We can pray that God would give them soul rest as they come to Christ with their burdens.

  23. God never leaves nor forsakes "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'" (Hebrews 13:5) We can pray that God would assure them of His constant presence and never-failing faithfulness.

  24. God guides His people "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you." (Psalm 32:8) We can pray that God would direct their steps and give them clear guidance through His counsel.

  25. God renews strength "But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31) We can pray that God would restore their spiritual vitality as they wait upon Him in faith.

  26. God's love is inseparable "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39) We can pray that God would deepen their assurance that nothing can sever them from His electing love.

  27. God blesses obedience "If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land." (Isaiah 1:19) We can pray that God would give them willing hearts to obey and experience His covenant blessings.

  28. God gives understanding "The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple." (Psalm 119:130) We can pray that God would open their understanding as they study and meditate on Scripture.

  29. God grants repentance "God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins." (Acts 5:31) We can pray that God would graciously grant them genuine repentance that leads to life.

  30. God's grace is sufficient "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Corinthians 12:9) We can pray that God would show them the sufficiency of His grace in their particular trial or weakness.

  31. God delivers from evil "The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen." (2 Timothy 4:18) We can pray that God would deliver them from all evil and preserve them unto His heavenly kingdom.
